washington area, and tonight it still feels like the upper 90s. good saturday, afternoon, i'm craig melvin. it's still really hot and humid out there. some folks are having a rough time beating the heat, but here is the good news. we've seen the last of the triple digitses at least for a while. the temperatures going to be dropping. chuck bell live in the weather center with an update for us tonight. what's the good word, chuck? >> all right, craig, our flirting with record high temperatures is just about done with us after the last couple of days, we were up into the upper 90s on thursday, but the record was 104, so we didn't break that. on friday, though, we had a high of 102. the record was 103. so we missed it by one. today, the record was 101. but we made it to 102, so we broke it by one. tomorrow, the record's 101, and i'm forecasting 97. so we'll be close, but i don't think that we'll get the cigar tomorrow. right now still 88 degrees in downtown washington with heat index values still hovering right around the 95-degree mark. so very uncomfortable stuff out there. the heat a

tonight police are on the scene in london investigating. >>> good saturday, everyone. i'm craig melvin. we start tonight with the extreme heat, for a second day in a row we have hit record temperatures. and in is an excessive heat warning in effect for the entire viewing area right now. in suitland, a pool was the most popular attraction at their community day celebration. a similar story at the columbia place marketplace. but for folks living at one apartment complex on massachusetts avenue, the heat is downright unbearable. the air conditioning hasn't been working right since thursday, and it's not going to be fixed until tuesday. one resident says in her apartment, it's a stifling 91 degrees. property managers are working to make things cooler. in the meantime, they have extended hours of the rooftop pool there. the pool won't close until 2:00 a.m. chuck bell standing by in the weather center with an update. chuck, how hot did it get today? >> another day in the record books, that's all that matters. we keep breaking one record after another. we set a record before the sun even came

revised bill this afternoon. craig boswell is breaking down what is in the bill that is up for a vote this hour and one of the reasons the deal is still not done. >> reporter: an 11th hour deal to prevent the united states from going into default on august 2nd could be at hand. with both sides expressing optimism that negotiations that have taken place throughout the weekend could break the partisan impasse. >> cooperation is the only way forward. compromise is the only way forward. >> reporter: a departmenttive deal between the white house and congress would raise the debt ceiling through 2012 and guaranteed cuts of $9 billion but a second debt limit increase would prompt one of three scenarios. first a bipartisan committee would identify $1.5 trillion in savings over the next ten years. those deficit cuts would be written into a bill that must clear congress. if not, congress must pass a balanced budget amendment to the constitution and send it to the state's for consideration. if congress fails to pass either, the deal under discussion would force across the board cuts to gove
